A little more about me…
Flashback to my senior year of high school (spring 2023), I had an assignment to critique blogs in my college writing class. My friend, Callie Lizak, sent me Meredith Good’s blog, and it inspired me to start writing things into a random Google Doc whenever I remembered. A quick excerpt of the first thing in this doc:
“Feeling inspired. Currently in my college writing class, analyzing Meredith Goods’ blog for my presentation assignment. Thank you Callie Lizak, for telling me about this blog. I owe all these journal entries to you. I could sit here reading her excerpts forever. Maybe one day I’ll be super famous and I can look back on this and be like, wow, what I would do to be a senior in high school again.”
Throughout high school, I knew I wanted to major in marketing. But, I always knew growing up that I was very much a math and science kid and not a language arts and history kid. I didn’t even take creative writing my senior year of high school because I would have never considered myself creative. I can’t draw to save my life, and that has never changed (except for a good coloring book). I also felt like my writing was at the same level as a 6th grader. I don’t have a strong vocabulary, and I struggle with keeping things concise (can you tell?)
I start my freshman year at KU, and I start my business marketing major. And let me tell you, I HATED it. I knew I wanted to work in social media, especially for sports teams. Digital marketing was the way to go. 3 weeks into the school year, I switched my major to strategic communications in the J-School, and I immediately knew that it was the right decision. I have found my place in the journalism school; the friendships came naturally with other students and professors. It has pushed me to embrace my creative side, which I felt like I never had growing up.
Many of you also know that I am entering my second year as the social media editor for the University Daily Kansan, which is KU’s student-run news publication. Being around strong writers for a long period of time has inspired me to get better with my writing, which is another reason why I wanted to start this blog. Maybe this will be the year I write my first byline for The Kansan. You never know!
(I wrote this MONTHS ago in summer 2025. And now it’s April 24th, 2026, and I will be the managing editor next year, overseeing all multimedia and digital presence of the Kansan, and I’ll be the boss of a team of about 10 editors. You never know where life takes ya!)
