Let me preface by saying it’s currently 12:30 am and I’m on a flight to MALTA. How lucky am I?
Our flight was delayed by an hour and 15 minutes, which is setting our arrival time to be around 2 am Malta time.
I also have no service. Sitting here with my camera roll and my thoughts. Which is why I’m writing this LOL.
Anyways. I finished my book. Don’t Be In Love by Liana Cincotti (follow me on Goodreads here if you haven’t😆). Then the lights go off. I wasn’t planning on sleeping because I still wanted to be able to go to bed tonight once we get to the Airbnb. I think to myself, let’s play some chill music. What do I shuffle? Guns N’ Roses.
Genuinely, I was out like a LIGHT. Within 2 minutes of Since I Don’t Have You, I was out. And then I woke up during the seventh minute of November Rain a few songs later and fell right asleep.
I woke up, and I thought to myself, genuinely, who falls asleep to GNR as comfort music? This is hard 80s rock. But it WORKS. A foolproof method since I was a child. Why I decided to put on GNR when I wasn’t planning on sleeping, I’m not sure, but I think a part of me needed the comfort of home for a bit.
I’ve been abroad for over three weeks now, and I still have just over a month until I’m back in the States. I’m having the time of my life, but slowly the homesickness is starting to creep up.
And sometimes all you need are the constants in life to bring you back to ground you again for a bit. And tonight I found that in shuffling my downloaded GNR songs halfway across the world while flying to a random country off the coast of Italy for a weekend trip.
I’m thinking about all the places in the world I’ve probably listened to GNR to get myself to sleep. My childhood bedroom in my dad’s apartment in Eden Prairie, when it was just the two of us. On the living room HomePod of our house in Chaska, trying to take a nap after school or after my Sunday brunch Hazeltine host shift. Trying to sleep in my bed for the last night before moving to KU as a freshman. My Corbin dorm. The sorority house sleeping dorm. And now on a flight to MALTA while studying abroad in London for six weeks.
And on August 8 at Mystic Lake, I will hear all of my childhood songs live with my parents. Hopefully I don’t fall asleep.
Anyways I’m very lucky and miss home at all the same time, but sometimes it doesn’t feel too far away!!!!!
